Tea Tree, the Aussie essential oil.

Tea tree oilis produced from the tree with the botanical name, Melaleuca alternifolia.

The essential oil is extracted through the process of steam distillation from the twigs and leaves of this tree.

Native to Australia, this shrub like tree is found along streams and in swampy areas in Southeast Queensland and New South Wales.

Legend has it that Captain James Cook, learned from the native Australians to brew tea from the leaves which he gave to his crew to prevent scurvy.  Hence giving the Melaleuca alternifolia the name ‘Tea’ tree.

In the early 1900’s Dr Arthur Penfold discovered that Tea Tree oil was more potent than the common antiseptic of the time carbolic acid. The main difference was that Tea Tree didn’t burn or irritate the skin. During World War II there was an outbreak of foot fungus that spread amongst soldiers hospitalising hundreds of men. Tea tree oil was found to be a popular cure to the nasty disease and was introduced to the first aid kits of our armed forces to prevent infections and treat wounds.

For the past 70 years, tea tree oil has been documented in a number of medical studies referring to its ability to kill many strains of bacteria, viruses and fungi.

The Aboriginals have benefitted from its wonderful properties for many generations.

Tea Tree Oil has been used as a popular antiseptic and disinfectant in Australia since the 1920s.

When walking the aisles of most supermarkets, chemists and health food stores you can find countless products containing tea tree oil. From the pure oil through to soaps, lip balms, creams, lotions and throat lozenges.
