Should You Be Using Cold Pressed Oils In Your Products? Aromatic Ingredients

In the essential oil industry, not all plant matter can be treated equally. This is especially true for citrus fruits that are too sensitive for the heat involved in traditional steam distillation. In order to obtain truly therapeutic and high quality citrus oils, the process of expression, also known as cold pressing oils, becomes necessary.

If you aren’t already using cold pressed oils in your product formulations, now is the time to begin. The term “cold pressed” has become a buzzword, and consumers now associate it with the natural and holistic products they are determined to use to replace artificial ingredients and harmful chemicals.

How Does Cold-Pressed Expression Work?

Expression is the most direct form of essential oil extraction commonly used to obtain citrus essential oils like Lemon, Orange, Bergamot, Lime, and Tangerine.

Hundreds of years ago, expression was done by hand after soaking the citrus rind in warm water to make it more receptive to pressing. A sponge was used to press the rind, break the essential oil cavities, and absorb the oils that flowed out. Today, that tedious job can now be done with machines. The rind of the fruit is placed in a container with spikes. Those spikes puncture the peel as the container rotates and generates centrifugal force that separates the essential oils from the fruit juice. This is considered cold pressing because no heat or steam is needed to gather the oils.

The Benefits of Using Cold Pressed Essential Oils

Citrus oils are among the most popular with essential oil users, so you need to be sure that your products are formulated with citrus oils that still retain their integrity and therapeutic properties. This is only possible through cold pressing since a high level of heat applied to citrus material will break down and degrade the tiny molecules within the oils. By using cold pressed essential oils in your product formulations, you offer consumers powerful health advantages, full potency, and unrestricted aroma.
